Good design can change the lives of people living with dementia
Dementia can impact how a person experiences the world around them.
Through good design principles and techniques, we can support people living with dementia to navigate their environment, helping them to maintain quality of life and independence. Spaces designed with dementia in mind have been shown to reduce behaviours and symptoms related to dementia, by relieving anxiety and reducing confusion, among other things.
Small changes can make a big difference
At the Dementia Design School, you’ll learn about the National Aged Care Design Principles and Guidelines and how you can use them to:
- Enable your teams to provide better care
- Support those in your care to lead better lives
You will learn:
- How even small changes to existing spaces can make a difference
- The importance of selecting the right furniture, fixtures and fittings, taking into account elements like lighting, contrast, glare and acoustics
- How colour and design features can promote a familiar sense of home
- How to balance design considerations with quality and risk requirements
- Ultimately, how to develop a quality improvement for your site
Community of practice
Bring a case study of an issue or problem you would like to address, and we’ll solve it as a group. Bring photos, blueprints and anything else that will best illustrate it.
