Dementia Design School
Design is a powerful tool that influences the way we understand the world around us. This is especially true for people living with dementia.
At the Dementia Design School you will gain essential knowledge and tools to assess how supportive a space is for people living with dementia. Equipped with these new skills, you will be empowered to develop new and exciting environments and re-imagine older spaces for the better.

- 1-2 April 2025 - 2 Day Design School Melbourne, VIC
- 17-18 June 2025 - 2 Day Design School Daw Park, SA
- 20-21 August 2025 - 2 Day Design School Miranda or Hammondville, NSW (location to be confirmed)
Why Design Matters
During this course you will learn about:
- The new National Care Design Principles and Guidelines and their important in creating enabling environments
- The history of the cottage or household model of design
- The current landscape, obligations and challenges for providers concerning their service environments
- How models of care impact people living in the spaces created
- How dementia impacts a person’s ability to make sense of the world around them
- Why design matters and how it influences everyday life
- The guiding principles and features that underpin design to support better quality of life for people living with dementia
- How to communicate effectively with architects to create better spaces
- Qualities of spaces that enable people to find their own way
- The importance of better dining experiences and the centre of the home
- Arranging and designing outdoor spaces that people want to live in
- The balance between the technical side of lighting, acoustics, air quality, thermal control, colour and contrast, and maintaining a domestic and familiar space that supports people to thrive
- Tools to evaluate spaces and identify areas for improvement
Finally, you will tour an example of our cottage model to see the design principles and features in action and experience what makes a home-like model work.
The Dementia Design School course content is not only based in evidence and best practice but is also informed by the lived experience of people with dementia.

When you attend in person your group will have the opportunity to tour one of HammondCare’s purposely designed dementia cottages and experience the design principles and features in practice.
